Track Team Looks to Build on Winter Records and Personal Bests

Junior Jania Siland runs to a top 6 finish at the Group 1 ChampionshipsSiland clinched a state medal with a top six finish in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.07, beating the school record, one of many school records the team broke during the season. Ninth grader Divina Webster’s 4’ 4” high jump set a new school record at the Jersey City Armory on January 24. The girls 4X400 relay team–consisting of senior Chiara Roe, sophomore Destiny Ramos, Webster, and Siland–broke the school’s record three times throughout the season and placed fifth with a time of 4:32.93 at the NJ JV-Novice Invitational on February 19, where Siland also broke the school’s long jump and 200-meter dash records. 

Senior Janiyah Smith had an impressive season in shot put, where she set her personal best with a throw of 20’ 5”. The following athletes also achieved personal bests:

  • Chiara Roe made significant strides in her 55m and 200m performances, setting personal bests of 8.30 and 29.62, respectively. She also ran an impressive 1:09.60 in the 400m, contributing to the strength of the girls' relay teams.
  • Jahquon White had an exceptional season with a personal best in the 55m dash (7.12), along with solid performances in the 200m (24.21) and 400m (57.71), showcasing his sprinting speed and consistency.
  • Rodney Simmons had impressive performances in the 400m (1:00.88) and 800m (2:31.87), along with a strong showing in the 55m dash (7.39), showing his versatility in middle-distance events.
  • Angelina Suarez consistently pushed herself in multiple events. She achieved a personal best in the 55m with 9.09 and the 200m with 33.74. Additionally, she made notable strides in the 400m (1:24.53) and 800m (3:53.27), showing her versatility and endurance.
  • Naieli Perez had strong performances in the 55m event, setting her personal best of 9.41, showing her commitment to improvement in the sprints.

The spirit of camaraderie and support among the athletes is palpable, with teammates consistently encouraging one another to strive for excellence. “The track and field team at UA isn't just a team, it's a family. The care my athletes have for each is truly one of a kind, and I'm beyond blessed to be able to lead them to success week in and week out,” Coach Arndt said.  

The track and field team has started practicing for the spring season and looks forward to setting more personal records. “We have a full team this year, and we can’t wait to see everyone’s skill set,” Arndt said.
