Welcome to Ms. Farah's Class

Hello and welcome, it is nice to meet you!
   My name is H. Amina Farah and I have taught English III for 16 years at UACHS, and for 6 years in various countries in Africa, and Asia. Over the last 17 years, I have taught more than 1,700 UACHS students and the experience has been the joy of my professional experience
11th grade is a watershed year for high-school students. My classes are rigorous in order to prepare my students for higher-level reasoning and learning. All of my years as a teacher have continued to confirm that students will learn what they are taught if they believe and trust the teacher. The following is the 2024-25 syllabus.
 

English III Syllabus 2024-2025 

 

Standing Project Assignments: 

4 Reading Book Assignments, Students book choices. 

  1. Requirements for all 4 Book assignments: All book choices must be age-appropriate, and must be at least 200 pages long. All assignments will include a 3-5 pages book ‘ANALYSIS’, not a book report, in MLA format, written in prose. The point value is 200.  In addition, this assignment requires a standard-sized poster representing some aspect of he book. Point value 100, and finally, students will be required to make a 5-10 minutes class presentation about the book. Point value 200. Due Dates to be announced. 

Books in order of assignments: Fiction, non-fiction, biography/autobiography, first childhood book. 

 

Assigned Books Speeches and Essays

  1. Class reading assignments may include, but not necessarily in this order, The Bluest Eye, Allegedly, The Kite Runner, Nickel and Dimed, Siddharta, Beloved,  Evicted, Native Son, Paradise Lost,  Allegedly, Enrique's Journey,  Macbeth, Beowulf, A Lesson Before Dying, Medea, The Stranger, Tuesdays with Morrie, and a variety of Speeches, e.g. The Gettysburg Address, I have a Dream.

 

Writing 

 Major Project Assignment 

  1. All students will write an original ‘Who Dunnit’, including an original poster. This assignment is a minimum of 8-10 pages. Point value 300 points, and 100 points for the poster. Due Date TBA.  

 

  1. A 22-25 pages research Extended Essay, 25-30 pages for AP students. Student will chose their topic/thesis statement. This essay is written in  APA format. Due Date May 1, 2024. Point Value 2,400 points.  

 

Various other written assignments TBA. 

 

  Weekly Assignments 

 

  1. Due every Tuesday: A 1-2 paragraphs referencing a current news article/event, student’s choice, to be posted in Google Docs. Source and/or news links required—point value-25 points.
  2. Do Now is the weekly list of 10 new SAT words and a homework assignment using the new words and do the next day. Writing Assignment TBA.

 

A 

Vocabulary 

   1.New SAT vocabulary will be introduced/assigned each Monday morning with a corresponding writing homework assignment. A following vocabulary quiz/test on the new words is given each Friday with varying point values. Anyone arriving late to class WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TAKE THE TEST. Make-up quizzes/tests will be offer the following Wednesday morning at 7:00 am or at the convenience of the teacher. No exceptions! 

Note: Not all quizzes will be announced. 

 

 

Presentation Assignment:  

  1. Each student will choose and research a personality, living or dead; and the student, when assigned, and, in costume, will entertain/present the personality in character for 10-15 minutes. Points value is 200, or 250 points for those who Dress in character. Also required is a 2-3 pages written essay about the person. Research sources are required... 

Assignment Date is TBA 

Each student will be assigned a 'debate' team. The students will debate a current social issue, with the objective to win the Debate.

Presentation assignment will also include group presentations 

 

 Rules for All Written Assignments 

1.All work must be in MLA or APA format. Any work not formatted will not be graded, and if formatted and resubmitted that work will be marked and graded as late. 

        2.Late work will not be worth more than 50% of the original value points. All errors will be deducted from the possible 50%. All plagiarized material or AI generated will receive a '0' grade.

  1. All work must be submitted in a Google File and on time, both to be provided by the teacher. NO WORK MAY BE MAILED TO THE TEACHER unless pre-arranged.
  2. When appropriate, all work must include sources.
